Discharge Printing
Discharge Printing
Discharging is the process of removing dye by altering or breaking down the dye’s chromophores using chemicals or bleach.
Discharging can be combined with other techniques to create more intricate designs, such as over-dyeing with different colors or adding layers of paint, printing, or stenciling with opaque fabric paints like Lumiere, Neopaque, and Setacolor. It can also be used to correct dyeing mistakes. In essence, discharging is a creative way to produce one-of-a-kind fabrics for quilting or clothing.
What is discharge printing (Discharge Printing on T-shirts)?
Discharge printing, also known as extract printing, is a method of applying a design to dyed fabric by using a color-removing agent, such as chlorine or hydrosulfite. This process bleaches out a white or light pattern on a darker-colored fabric background.
How is discharge printing done?
Discharge printing involves using water-based inks to remove the manufacturer’s dye from the fabric and replace it with the color of your choice. Unlike traditional screen printing, which sits on top of the fabric, discharge printing uses inks that soak into the fabric, effectively bleaching out the original dye.

This technique is often used to create attractive patterns or designs, such as those found in Shibori or Tie Dye, or through methods like stamping, stenciling, or block printing.
